ps, it appears that using vlc greatly accelerates the rate of slowdown. watching a random playlist of ripped avi files, i saw memory use go to 51.3% of 1 Gig RAM in about 45 minutes. stopping compiz took longerthan 2 minutes, performance was so degraded.
