Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Terminal will accept basic commands (top, ps -A), but will fail at
anything requiring password. Konsole seems to work fine, root login
works with same password. Intermittent and sporadic.

Gnome terminal does not authenticate 'su'  or 'sudo' using correct password. 
Konsole as root does.
