You are correct: When using gnome with compiz no borders are drawn. I attached a screenshot from a kde desktop without compiz -> Same bug. The window is moveable but that does not render it usable. You have to move it about 5 screens to see the other end. qtwengophone is the only application I could reproduce a similar effect with. k3b, djview4 etc. look as expected.
