My cable modem does not disconnect and I should not really call it a
modem I suppose.  My internet service is always up except for network
outages which are pretty rare.  The other possibility is that certain
brands of routers are somehow broken or slow with regards to dhcp.  My
router is a Linksys BefSR41 version 3.0.

I tested again with dhcp using ip numbers and no go.  I attached my
daemon log output.

ntpq -p
No association ID's returned

ip or host names and it appears ntp does not recover
