Had the same problem upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy with working fglrx+Xgl config. I had to revert several Xgl feisty-specific changes so stuff actually works.
I modified the suggestion in comment 7 and executed: sudo chmod a+w /tmp; sudo chmod o+t /tmp After that, the gnome session actually starts. I am sure it has something to do with orbit and Xgl.
