Ok, so the simplest thing worked. I attached a second (external) monitor and discovered that the display was exported to the second monitor from the very beginning, so I tried around again with the xorg.conf settings to get the main screen working to no avail. The difference is that I now had Ubuntu at least on some screen, so I installed the latest ati drivers for my card (which actually were supposed to only serve 3D acceleration, which is the reason why I didn't do this before), and "voila" the main screen is working at the full native 1400x900 resolution. I'm now trying to find a way to extend my desktop to the second monitor. Thanks for your patience though.
