In the latest Gutsy kernel images (looking at 2.6.22-13 here) vesafb is no longer compiled into the kernel image as it was when this bug was first reported. This is the reason the previous work-around no longer works.
As MOM has reported, it is now necessary to remove the vesafb module blacklist, and then have vesafb and fbcon loaded.
