I did a fresh install of Gutsy today, using the daily CD  20071006.2 This still 
gave the wrong unit A instead of C. After changing the applet settings in 
gconf-editor, setting the sensor type to 2 instead of 0, and restarting gdm 
this problem was solved. The attached picture shows the settings after the gdm 
restart (both sensors are listed twice, I only have 2 cpu cores).
Coretemp is used to read the processor temperature and processor is an Intel 
T7500. Sensors-applet version is 1.7.12+dfsg-1
