I've just repeated these steps a couple of times and I was finally given the message that for the settings to take effects, all users must log out. I've never seen this message before. I did this and now my settings of LCD Display 1280x800 have been remembered. However, the location field is blank, which doesn't seem right.
So it has worked, but I shouldn't have had to go through all of the above to finally save and remember settings I manually selected. Auto- detect didn't help at all. I'm very willing to help debug this if necessary.
