Will retry it this evening and post the results. I tried and completely removed the fglrx driver, and verified it was gone with modprobe and glxinfo. I regenerated my xorg.conf with the configuration tool, so I am surprised it is still having an influence on the generated x.org.
I guess that explains why I couldn't turn compiz on. Apologies for the big .ogg file I attached - even brief screen captures at 2048x1536 generate a lot of data.
