OK, one last try, then I'll leave you to work on the bugs in peace. How about a second installer icon on the desktop with safety-flags like --no-m-a set? This would admittedly be an additional choice to be made by the user, and it would introduce new clutter, but at least a point where it introduces no new UI step and would be minimally invasive on all current code. Think of it as the safe-boot options added to GRUB.
