I'm seeing this same issue on a Dell Latitude D610 with the following video adapter:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M22 [Mobility Radeon X300] The freeze occurs randomly, but the common theme seems to be when a dialog box is being faded in on top of other windows. For instance, I've had it occur when selecting from the dropdown list of URLs in Firefox, and also when using Alt-Tab to switch among windows. As others have reported, some times the cursor will still responsd (always stuck with the "pointing hand" icon), other times nothing will respond. In both cases, Neither Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace, nor Ctrl-Alt-F1 switch out of X. I have gnome-power-manager set to power down when I press the power button, but that does not work either.
