Matt: deleting the copied-up versions in /cow is probably the simplest answer, but (a) requires showmounts or else can only be done in the initramfs (b) is a code path in unionfs we don't otherwise exercise so I don't want to prod it now. I'm not sure I feel like chasing down all the possible places where modprobe might be called.
