Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Being a long time user of Gaim and Pidgin, I'm used to it foibles but
they have got a great deal worse as a result of the gui / libpurple
split.

With a slightly dodgy network connection (I have mobile internet), if I

1. select a different conversation tab or
2. attempt to open the conversation menu

the GUI sits in a wait state, compiz greys out the window and there is
no way to kill pidgin or use other apps until it (maybe) recovers. In
the end I have to switch to a VT log in and type "killall pidigin" to
recover my X session. I would think that this problem is kicked off by
anything that waits for network response before allowing the GUI to
continue.

I have tried pidgin on a good network connection and this problem
doesn't show but the GUI should not become unstable with the network
connection and effectively take X with it to the point that the new user
would be forced to hard reboot to recover.

I've tried pidgin on a slowish modem connection and this problem again
rears it's head.

To me at least it begs the question as to whether pidgin is stable
enough in it's current incarnation to be the default IM client on
Ubuntu.
