Public bug reported:

When you log out of gnome, GDM (I presume) restarts the X server, even
if AlwaysRestartServer=false is set in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. This is a
problem because gnome has a bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/120819) that
requires logging out and in again within one X session to fix. This
means that dual monitor support with twinview can't work. Basically, I
need an option to stop GDM restarting X when you log out (or, for
someone to fix the bug that makes this a problem, but I suspect this'll
be easier)
