I upgraded the following packages on 2016.5.3: nvidia-common:amd64 (1:0.4.17, 1:0.4.17.1), ubuntu-drivers-common:amd64 (1:0.4.17, 1:0.4.17.1)
And the black screen showed up again. I had to switch back to lightdm to login.
