Update: I found that I can reliably reproduce the failure by running stress --vm-bytes $(awk '/MemFree/{printf "%d\n", $2 * 0.9;}' < /proc/meminfo)k --vm-keep -m 1
and then trying to hibernate. So I did a git bisect between Ubuntu-4.2.0-34.39 and Ubuntu-4.2.0-35.40 and identified this commit[0] as the one that introduced the problem.
