Thanks for the information - this is good to know.

Perhaps the "on-demand" installation only checks when new backups are
configured? It appears that if there is an existing Deja-Dup
configuration stored in the dconf settings which relies on duplicity,
and Deja-Dup is upgraded to the new version, the application fails with
an error.

Ideally, if there is an existing backup configuration which relies on
duplicity (or other backends), and Duplicity is upgraded to this most
recent version, it could display a friendly message and provide the
option to install the required dependencies rather than failing with an
error message.
