Compiz does not count as that won't run out-of-the-box with fglrx
anyway. And as said, if you need 3D acceleration you could use it, but
you can't use suspend.

The response would indeed be different if the source code had been
available. Then the kernel devs would be willing to debug it. If you
look at how suspend debugging works you would understand why this is
difficult even with a driver where source is available (storing
information in RTC). And it seems impossible with a binary blob.

Complain to ATI please. It seems that they did not even respond to the
Ubuntu Kernel devs, or claimed that the thing they do is valid. At least
you can't find any claims that the SLUB allocator is wrong.
