The downside to removing it is that it would probably be impossible to
put it back in case anyone ever cared enough to fix it.

At least if it's left in, broken, someone may care enough debug the
issue and prepare a debdiff for sponsoring via the StableReleaseUpdate
procedure.

Of course if it's been broken for years or something then maybe no one
cares enough to debug and fix. At some point you're right, it's not
worth shipping broken software. How long has it been busted?
