I just verified on x86 + 14.04, and it looks like any changes to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT do not end up making their way into /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
It turns out /etc/default/grub.d/50-curtin-settings.cfg sets GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" I'm not exactly sure why this is, but I'll move this case over to curtin as it seems to be the culprit. ** Also affects: curtin (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: grub2 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** Summary changed: - Running update-grub on ppc64el does not update /boot/grub/grub.cfg with options from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT + Running update-grub does not update /boot/grub/grub.cfg with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT from /etc/default/grub ** Description changed: - Running update-grub on ppc64el does not update /boot/grub/grub.cfg with - options from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. + Running update-grub does not update /boot/grub/grub.cfg with options + from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub Reproducer: - 1. edit GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub . + 1. edit GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub . 2.
