This seems to be fixed in the latest released kernel for ubuntu 14.04: $ uname -rvp 3.13.0-83-generic #127-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 11 00:25:37 UTC 2016 x86_64
In both this desktop and another laptop running this kernel version, scangearmp can now detect the MG7150 Canon scanner over wifi. I don't know what's changed to fix this but you can now close this bug if you wish.
