I think that is not a duplicate of bug #129029. I occurred the same
problem. When i log into the gnome there is no gnome splash a there is
no login sound. When I log off the gnome there is no sound too. I
investigated that it may be connected with at-spi, becouse when I get
message that "no supporting technologies are used, check if you have
at-spi installed" (translated form polish so I don't know if it sounds
the same, but sense is not missed) then i can hear sound when logging
into gnome.
I have a question for afonic: Do you use Compiz Fusion? (especially from
Trevino repository - not officially supported)
