Hmm, good point there. However, it still frustrates me that something was broken, and then I found a workaround, and then that workaround was broken without fixing the original issue, which is the lcd backlight turning off. In addition, when gnome-power-manager isn't running, then only the automatic-changes plus actual-brightness method seems to allow brightness changing. Are there any plans for a console brightness control?
