This bug just showed up in my box too. It was originaly a kubuntu gutsy system. After installing ubuntu-desktop meta package i observed exactly the same layout bug. I tried to change the theme (did'nt helped) switch it with gtk-switch-theme2 (neighter). HP nc8430 ATI Compiz not enabled
