Problem was probably due to the machine being in recovery mode, so HAL wasn't running and the installation processes wrongly assume that HAL is always be active. the aptitude full-upgrade had gone wrong, crashing the machine, so I had to boot the machine into recovery mode to finish the installation. Obviously some of the installation scripts will only work on a fully functioning machine where all the services are active.
