Actually, you helped more than you think. :-)

So I did a little reading about the IOMMU issue and the problem is that
IOMMU itself is not the problem.  It just shows the real problem (I
think this is not new news, really.)  Anyway, the problem appears to be
the xhci_hcd device driver that I cannot disable.  I still don't
understand how that impacts the ethernet device driver, though.

I added the iommu=soft option to the boot menu and it seems that the
kernel is more lenient in treating the xhci_hcd mis-behavior and things
seem to work fine now.  So I guess I'll have to make option permanent
for the boot image.  That means I need to do that for every kernel
update.  Yuck.
