Thanks for looking at the bug, after 13 months! ;-) I just tested it in casper:
 * laptop-mode works fine
 * xresprobe ati still returns:
id:
res:
freq:
disptype: lcd/lvds

 * xserver-xorg.postinst does not write any resolution to the xorg.conf,
which is fine, because the ati driver picks the right mode and
resolution by itself.

 * With respect to my second comment, the ati driver no longer need the
MonitorLayout, and it detects the screen's resolution as it should. It spits
out:
(WW) RADEON(0): LVDS Info:
XRes: 1680, YRes: 1050, DotClock: 121000

So yes, xresprobe is still broken, but it doesn't matter so much any
longer (or for the time being).

I forgot to test dpkg-reconfigure -fnoninteractive xserver-xorg on the
fully booted Gutsy system :( It fails on Feisty, and writes out
"1024x768". I also forgot to try forcing xresprobe to try ddc.
