Update: dropping the two hunks of debian/patches/iis.patch that modify iis/xim.C has cured the symptoms for me (on amd64). So I was *almost* right in my conjecture that this bug and Debian #805641 might have the same root cause. The bugs are not the same (the problem here in 7.2+dfsg-4 is that the client data point to a variable that has gone out of scope) but the fixes are related (one is a subset of the other).
