This is still happening on Edgy. There are numerous forum reports of the issue.
Particularly notable is this one: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=196197 Daniel Chen suggests to reload the snd_intel8x0 module with the parameter "ac97_quirk=hp_only". This worked for the original poster, but does not for me.
