I forgot to mention that this fresh install of Gutsy also included
installing Grub manually at install time and Grub works fine... I
followed this guide:

tbh, I'm more or less a  linux newbie and it took me ages to notice that
within the memtest .deb package part of the script calls:

update-grub

which from part of the FakeRaidEdgy guide didn't work for me and the
workaround was to call the following instead:

exec -a update-grub /usr/sbin/update-grub.real $*

This gave me the idea to manually download the updated memtest .deb
package myself and modify the "update-grub" line to the above.
Installing this modified memtest .deb works fine... After that, running
update manager now no longer reports any errors! :-D
