I tried adding the piix driver (without explicitly removing the ata_piix, should I have done that as well?), on one of the two previous boards, it didn't solve the problem. Also tried things like noapic, acpi=off, without result. I thought the piix driver is for Intel systems? I am using AMD with nVidia chipset. BTW: I never put my system in sleep mode (it is a desktop system), and the problem frequently occurs during boot or login.
