Its because its not synced the frequency between the output and input.. In other words, if you play a 96 kHz audio (or 48 kHz audio) via a 44.1 kHz output, it gets faster "trying to squeeze everything in the 44.1 kHz stream"..
It could be a problem at your digital input (yamaha), but I dont think it is there because they sense what kHz is beeing used and adapts the input accordingly. The error is somewhere between the kHz of what you are trying to play, what the soundcard is sonfigured to play up sounds at, and at the digital output at the card.
