There could be two possible situations:

1. You didn't unmount the drive properly. That's some things new Linux
users don't do. They assume if they just yank it out like they done in
Windows, no harm, no foul. So, it's possible your partition table is
screwed.

If you have backed it up, run gparted. You might see that the drive has
a partition table that is messed up. Go to Devices > Create partition
table and a warning will pop up informing you you will erase all that is
on the device. Make sure 'msdos' is selected and then click OK. Then
format it as fat32.

But if you haven't, apt-get install testdisk. The instructions are
beyond the scope of this bug report.

2. Your USB disk is toast. This is not that common, but it does happen.
