Public bug reported: This is on a Fresh install of unbuntu 14.04.3 64 bit from iso.
Then, using the Ubuntu Software Center, installed the Xubuntu Desktop System. The OS is installed in VMWare Workstation 12, with vmware tools from the VMWare distribution (not open vm tools). At first it runs fine. After a random time frame (sometimes 2 minutes, sometimes several hours), the response to mouse selection becomes slow. Clicking a menu item, for example, takes 3 or 4 seconds to get a response. Then, it escalates until the system is unresponsive. Repeated the process several times - fresh install of Ubuntu, then Xubuntu desktop (once I figured out that this wasn't anything else - I was trying to setup an Eclipse/ADT/Java/Android development system in 64 bits). I downloaded the Xubuntu 14.04.3 ISO, did a fresh install of that, and it's fine. I have Ubuntu 12.04 in both 32 and 64 bit installations, both are fine using LXDE (they are my previous/working Android development machines, all VMWare workstation VM's). It appears that a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04.3 works fine. The problem appears to be installing the Xubuntu desktop into a running Ubuntu (standard Unity) machine. For a while (a few days) I though it was Eclipse (Luna/Mars/Juno) or Java (which Eclipse requires), but a fresh attempt revealed the issue appears with no additional applications installed (tried to narrow this down). The Xubuntu installation (that is, from the Xubuntu ISO, not the Ubuntu with XFCE installed) has no problem running Eclipse (for days the system is fine). I did not try an installation of XFCE from any other source on Ubuntu. Note that the CPU usage is not an issue. The CPU is quiet when the problem occurs. It appears that one can control applications in a terminal emulator which perform at reasonable speeds (as expected) even though the system in not responsive to mouse operation. The cursor moves without incident, but clicks get no response for long delays (seconds, and increasing over time until it seems the OS is stuck completely). Further, attempting to move windows around, or resize, becomes impossible. The cursor SHAPE, on the other hand, may get stuck - that is, some mouse over switches the cursor to the hand, but never returns to the standard arrow, but moves just fine, but scrollbars, menu items, moving or resize windows - all are very slow or all but stop functioning. Atl-TAB to switch windows still works as long as the delay in mouse response is within about 10 seconds of a click, but eventually that stops functioning and keyboard input becomes compromised. Booting the same OS into a Unity desktop session seems to work ok. The problem does not appear there. Further, the host operating system operates normally throughout these incidents. Other VM's running Ubuntu 12 (32 and 64 bit at the same time) are fine, too. No other VM's are having problems, including VM's of other operating systems like Windows 7 and 8. The host is Windows 8.1, 32 Gbytes RAM, Intel Corei7 @ 4 Ghz HT enabled, HPET fully enabled (both Bios and OS).
