in reply to #13: I am running Trusty on a no-name desktop. This morning kernel 3.13.0-66-generic appeared on the list of updates. I have *not* activated any "proposed" or non-standard repository. As I am a fair-to-middling level user I managed to boot to a previous version of the kernel, and removed the faulty version. Checking a few hours later 3.13.0-66-generic no longer appears as an update. Hopefully it has been recalled until a fix is made available.
