I did not notice anything particular after changing them, other than getting further than loading the lp module in recovery mode. No I am not using cryptsetup.
I commented out the "console owner" line from both files and rebooted, X works fine. Bizarre. I will attach the syslog of the first boot after upgrading upstart. It's full of X related errors, seems strange that upgrading upstart would trigger this. Perhaps it's just co-incidental and something else weird happened?
