Followup. I found my problem and corrected it. It was my USB keyboard. My keyboard is a "Microsoft Natural Ergonomics Keyboard 4000 v1.0". Picture: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61eczN%2BZTQL._SX466_.jpg The "back" button (located center/bottom) was stuck down. I have had the keyboard for sometime and apparently enough 'gunk' accumulated in and around the button that it was kept from returning to the up (off) position. Once I cleaned the button (removed it and blew out the area and cleaned the edges of the button) the problem went away.
