Public bug reported:

Hi,

/usr/sbin/service is highly useful especially since some ubuntu systems
use upstart while others use systemd to handle things in a unique way.

However, it is quite talkative, a simple status query produces lots of
output.

It should have a --quiet option to keep it silent and just report the
exit status.

regards
