I meant that you would copy the output from those commands, and post it
here.

Since you apparently are logged in as root, you need a slightly
different command for .xsession-errors. If your username is abby, it
would be:

cat /home/abby/.xsession-errors

and probably also

cat /home/abby/.xsession-errors.old

Please note that you need to do this instantly after a failed attempt to
log in as your user.
