I had the same trouble for 2.6.22-2 on HP 500 notebook my workaround is an ALSA scriplet for hibernate I use Gnome UI. The hibernate packet from Debian Etch Installation instruction is inside (take care of the paths) As this plugin is for GNU component it inherits the license.
