If this bug has been definitively attributed to xorg then I apologize for implying confusion as to its source. I've been primarily reading other bug reports documenting similar behaviour and they are fairly evenly split between attributing it to compiz, xorg or quite often nvidia.
Regardless, the option of automatically switching to metacity before switching users is still a valid workaround for those of us not using Kubuntu. After fairly extensive messing around with options and preferences, it definitely occurs on my system (Ubuntu Gutsy amd64) *only* when compiz is running. Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer and so lack the skills to automate the workaround. I've written the creator of the fast-user-switch-applet asking if it's possible to include a "run-script-on-switch-user" option but have not yet heard back.
