Thanks William for your comment. Reading activity following your links, there seems to be differences:
* launchpad (here): problem starts immediately, not on receiving heavy traffic. Adapter unusable in practice on USB3 (not even for moderate activity), always ok on USB2. Also, machine feels a little sluggish but no crash, kernel panic or hang observed. * github: reports dmesg but not much detail about what's wrong * bugzilla: "transferring a huge number of files or pretty heavy files caused kernel panic: either I had a stacktrace displayed or the computer became completely unresponsive.", USB3, sometimes USB2.
