Hi guys,

I had exactly the same problem and solved it by purging (instead of just
uninstalling or removing) the postgresql-8.2.

Now everything works fine: the /etc/postgresql has been created along
with the startup script.

I don't think the difference between remove and purge is obvious and
this should be addressed as a more general problem.
