There are several reports that the model works fine as far back as 12.04 However, there are several confirmed reports that disconnecting the internal battery and/or re-insulating its leads, solves the issue. That suggests a power starvation issue, or that some component remains powered when the PC is shutdown and therefore never does a cold reset.
