I have tried the suggested fix, with no luck. I edited the fstab and rebooted (although don't think that was necessary) and repeated the steps in the original bug description. I got almost the exact same results.
It shows the same error message in Gnome and I can still get to the files via the WinXP VM, however the log messages in the syslog are a bit different: Sep 24 08:04:09 d620 NetworkManager: <debug info>^I[1190610249.826836] nm_hal_device_added (): New device added (hal udi is '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_UDF_Volume').
