I'm not sure what was happening on this machine, but when I wanted to upgrade to Feisty, it gave more problems with the partitions in that I could not resize. With Knoppix 5.0.1 (5.1 has a missing library) I ran Testdisk and got some suggestions that the geometry settings were wrong. Finally just wiped everything and started from scratch and was able to partition OK.
I suspect that the Compaq folk got a supply of drives that were slightly different geometry but "worked" with a Windows image. Then I came and tried to alter things and the difference caused troubles. In any event, the bug is not testable now.
