Correction: I get 303 Mb output (data which would go to the printer)
with pdftops (the default) on my test queue. If I switch to pdftocairo,
I get a 2 Mb file output and the simple PDF prints much quickly.

I have to do more tests since THIS sample file prints faster with
pdftocairo but others don't...

It seems that passing the LanguageLevel (in PPD) to "2" also helps.
