Public bug reported: If I install Kubuntu versions 13 & 14 to an external drive, selecting it for installation of Grub (eg sdc), it causes the main drive to become inaccessible. To Device Notifier the main drive is reported as if it were the external drive - a different label but exactly the same size. Device Notifier is unable to open the main drive. This caused a complete loss of my Windows drive, leading to days of Photoreccing - the only program able to find files on that partition.
The second time: After a series of updates -> black screen events, one of which left me without even network access, I tried again installing to an external, again selecting the external for Grub, but with Kub on the main drive. The main again became invisible to the installer. however, After much stuffing around: plugging/unplugging the external (I was booted on a live usb), trying to access with parted, the main drive again became visible. I think the reasons for wanting an independent install of an OS are pretty obvious: the main fails but you're able to immediately keep working. Reason to have the boot independant are also obvious: there's no reason to have a selection for something that's only for emergencies & spends most of it's time in a drawer. Having your hard drive wiped shouldn't be the way you find out that this is a Bad Idea. regarding the black screens, it now seems there are plenty of reasons for it happening. After one of mine ( I think I've had five) nouveau read/write errors scrolled down my screen for ages. Isn't it possible to have some self checking mechanism, rather than suffering this insame waste of time? most of the fixes involve typing a dozen letters, eg: plasma-desktop. Also, I've seen plenty of bad articles on backing up, and I can't find a decent backup program. C'mon, I'm freakin out here! ** Affects: kubuntu-ppa Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Kubuntu PPA. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1473706 Title: Installing Kubuntu to a USB drive hides main drive, makes it inaccessible To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/+bug/1473706/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
