Just tried to reproduce this behaviour - successfully!
Opening an unread mail (of course including attached files) works
properly, reopen the same mail with status "read" works, too. After
switching to any other desktop (on XFCE) and back then, the same mail
causes the bug described above! Marking the mail "unread" makes
Thunderbird display the list correctly again.
